Stade Bordeaux - Atlantique, Bordeaux
Tuesday, June 14 2016 - 18:00 CET
Austria team are one of four nations – along with England, Italy and Romania – who negotiated Euro 2016 qualifying unbeaten. They won nine and drew one of their qualifying games - bettered only by the perfect 10 out of 10 from England - to top their group eight points clear of Russia whilst third placed Sweden subsequently came through the play-offs. They have been relatively inconsistent since securing a place at UEFA Euro 2016 having lost three and won two of their last five outings.
Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly is set to make history by becoming the oldest player to feature at a European Championship, at 40 years and 75 days old. The only injury concern for manager Marcel Koller is over striker Marc Janko - who was Austria's top scorer in qualifying with seven goals - but he is expected to be fit after recovering from a neck injury. Kevin Wimmer may have to settle for a place on the bench, with Martin Hinteregger and the highly rated Aleksandar Dragovic set to start at the heart of the defence.
Having finished only third in their qualifying group behind Northern Ireland and Romania, Hungary are one of the countries to have benefited from UEFA's expansion of the finals to 24 teams as they beat Norway 3-1 on aggregate in the play-off. They are in fairly good form coming into the tournament, with the only defeat in their last five games being against World Champions Germany. Furthermore, they have now lost just five of 21 matches in all formats.
Gergo Lovrencsics is out through injury while Krisztian Nemeth is a slight doubt for the Hungarians and his muscle injury could see him settle for a place on the bench. Tamas Kadar is sidelined due to injuyr, with Mihaly Korhut expected to start at left-back in his absence.
Probable lineups:
Austria: Almer – Klein, Dragovi?, Hinteregeer, Fuchs – Ilsanker, Alaba – Harnik, Junuzovic, Arnautovic – Janko.
Hungary: Kiraly – Fiola, Guzmics, Lang, Kadar – Pinter, A. Nagy – Kleinheisler, Gera, Dzsudzsak – Szalai.
